Eating dinner in peace while on holiday?
Gold Coast Southport Sharks has the solution!
Order dinner, let the kids play in Wobbygongs while they wait, and let them go back once they are done. It’s encouraged
I’m always on the lookout for great places to eat with kids with REAL FOOD. Most menus are woeful- variations of junk food style meals such as nuggets and chips, fish cocktails and chips, cheeseburgers and two-ingredient pizza, with a splashing of spaghetti bolognaise thrown in. But Gold Coast Southport Sharks lets the kids eat from a range of their different restaurant menus and there’s real food on offer!
Places to Eat with Kids: Dine A La Carte
The most popular family-friend option, Frenzy Food Café at Southport Sharks, has a couple of healthier options beyond the norm, (grilled chicken and vegetables would be Jack’s food of choice!) but children are also welcome to order from the award-winning Carmody’s restaurant too.
Their children’s menu features Wagyu and Brie Burgers, Grilled chicken and swiss burgers, Tempura fish bites, and I presume slightly more swanky chicken nuggets for those accustomed to eating on the healthy side of life.
All these meals from Carmody’s include a bowl of vanilla bean ice-cream with the children’s choice of topping for dessert.
(Foodie families should definitely check out Carmody’s adult menu too. Ohhhh. My mouth waters just reading the Signature Grill menu.)
But the best reason for a family to visit Gold Coast Southport Sharks? There’s one thing that this place has that other restaurants don’t. It’s called Wobbygongs Kids Fun Zone!
Wobbygongs is a godsend for parents needing a bit of time-out from the normal routine of restaurant-eating scenarios. The ones where we order, and then have to spend the next 45 minutes or so wait time alternating between entertaining the kids and cajoling/bribing/disciplining them to behave properly while other people nearby our table eat.
Wobbygongs gives us a breather and time for a bit of adult conversation, while the kids do what kids do best. Play. The kids order and can then go hang out in the purpose-built play area, with a rock climbing wall, mini basketball court, playstations, activity area, and two theatrettes showcasing the latest movies and television.
When meals are ready, children are given a 30 minute meal break to eat, but can return to play with their new friends while you linger over desserts and after-dinner coffee or tea treats.
Wobbygongs is open seven days a week. Monday to Friday from 5pm, and from 10am on Saturday and Sunday. Children 3 to 12 are catered for.
PS: There are a bunch of other chefs out there in family restaurant land that are changing the way a typical children’s menu looks. We’ll be featuring a bunch of them on “Roam the Gnome” in the coming months. As a food lover, who wants to encourage healthy food choices in my kids too, I give this innovative lot a BIG hi-five!
